Inside a building that was once the headquarters of a high-powered corporate lawyer is now being investigated for its role in the death of a former high-ranking state prosecutor.
As part of the ongoing investigation, a federal grand jury is also looking into the allegations that one of its former staffers and a state trooper abused their authority, including by firing a state police investigator in the case, said Dan Grosz, the state attorney general’s press secretary.
He said the investigation is ongoing.
Grosz said the grand jury has been given subpoena power to look into allegations against former State Attorney Michael DeGuerin.
The grand jury also is looking into allegations of abuse by a state patrol officer who was fired after he fired a firearm in the course of an investigation, Groszz said.
Greensburg-based DLA Piper filed a federal lawsuit in November against DeGuestin in response to allegations that DeGuers son, Andrew DeGuert, used state police to help him run his real estate business.
Andrew DeGuerto, a top lobbyist for the family of DeGuera, did not respond to multiple requests for comment by deadline.
DeGuerins office in Philadelphia is the headquarters for the state’s attorney general.
He was charged in March with three felony counts, including one count of official misconduct in connection with a fraud case involving DeGuercio’s son, according to court documents.
The charges stem from a 2013 fraud scheme in which DeGuermio allegedly took money from DeGuero’s real estate company and used it to pay for personal expenses for his family, including his son, the documents state.
Deguerins son, Nicholas DeGuerdins, did his job well.
He worked with a prosecutor in the DeGueriks case and then, when he left the case to start his own, he was allowed to keep his job and continued to work in the office, according a statement from the office.
But in March, DeGuerrin resigned from the prosecutor’s office after a federal judge dismissed a complaint against him.
DeGuernes lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The case against Deguerin was investigated by the FBI in 2016 and the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office in 2017.
Both offices said they did not believe any of the allegations made against De Guerin were credible.
De Guerrins lawyer, James C. O’Brien, declined to comment.
He said the office has been in contact with the attorney generals office about the allegations.
De Guerins attorney, James O’Donnell, did no immediate comment.
