Hospital workers at a nursing home in New Jersey are mourning a man who died after being struck by a train.
John J. Smith, 54, of Newark, was working at the Newark-Cedarhurst Hospital when he was struck, the New Jersey Department of Health said.
A nurse at the hospital said she was walking to work when she saw Smith slumped over on the floor, the department said in a news release.
Smith was taken to a hospital and died of his injuries, according to the department.
The state Department of Labor and Industries has been notified.
Smith is survived by his wife, Barbara, and their two children.
The nursing home where Smith worked has been closed while it investigates the cause of the accident, according the department’s website.
Smith joined the hospital in 1984 and has been with the department for nearly 40 years.
He was also a senior vice president and director of research and development.
