Washington (CNN) House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is calling for the House of Representatives to spend $7 billion on a new building, new office floors, and a new stairwell in the Capitol complex that houses the House, Senate and White House offices.
In a statement, Pelosi said the buildings would “provide critical support for our federal government, while providing an elegant setting for Congress to conduct business.”
The Capitol has long been plagued by the building’s aging, leaking ceilings, which have made it an “outdated, dangerous and unsafe” facility.
It is currently slated to be torn down by 2021 and replaced by a state-of-the-art office building.
The $7.3 billion building renovation, which includes building work and new floor materials, is slated to begin in 2020.
It will include new floors, an elevator, a glass elevator, glass lobby, a new lobby, new floors and more.
The House of Representative is the largest chamber in the United States.
It has the second largest number of members and is the second most powerful.
The Senate also has a majority of seats.
